Our heritage

Our 700 year heritage gives us perspective but our story has never been about standing still.

Ideas that endure

Across the centuries generations of Mercers have responded to the world around them – as
merchants and entrepreneurs, philanthropists and educators, innovators and custodians. The
decisions they made, the institutions they created and the ideas they championed were of their
time. Today they form part of our history.

That same spirit of enterprise, curiosity and responsibility continues to shape the Company
today.

We are proud of our heritage and committed to its careful stewardship. But we believe the best
way to honour the past is to build on it: applying what we have learnt, responding to new
challenges and continuing to evolve so that the Company remains relevant and impactful for
generations to come.

People who shaped their time

From the philanthropic legacy of Richard Whittington and our centuries-long relationship with
education, to the stewardship and reinvention of our property estate and our philanthropy today,
there is a continuous thread: using what has been entrusted to us to create lasting value for
others. Today’s ideas, decisions and innovations are the history of tomorrow.
